Specific Learning Disabilities

Specific Learning Disability is a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language. The SLD may manifest itself in a deficit to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations. This includes conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia (Colorado Department of Education).

Per the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), each American child is entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Not all learning disabilities are the same. SLDs manifest in a multitude of ways, each impacting the student’s’ ability to learn and/or output new knowledge. An appropriate education for a student with an SLD is one that is tailored, intentional, and equitable. At Front Range, we empower families with students with Specific Learning Disabilities to thrive.
